Public Speaking Competition

The District 9650 Public Speaking Competition is sponsored by Harvey World Travel.

Who can enter?

All students completing year 11 within the calendar who are living in District 9650 can enter this competition. The Rotary Club that nominates you will offer support and assistance during the competition.

Why is the competition run?

The competition is one of Rotarys youth programs, aimed at giving year 11 students the opportunity to broaden their public speaking experience.

How is the competition run?

Entrants must be nominated by a local Rotary Club by the end of third term. If each Club in your town has more than one entrant, a competition between those entrants will take place at a designated meeting of that Club. The winning entrant will then go on to compete in the first round of the competition usually in October.

The winners of each section will then compete in The Zone semi-final in November. The District finals will be held in February of the following year to select the four entrants who will compete at the annual District Conference.

The Prize

The winner will receive a return flight to New Zealand, courtesy of Harvey World Travel Inverell, and will be hosted for two weeks in Masterton by the Rotary Club of Masterton.

What topics can you choose?

You can choose any topic, but it must relate to one or more principles of the Rotary Four - Way Test. This test is the principle by which Rotarians test their own commitment to the objects of Rotary.

The Rotary Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do -

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
